We have had thousands of books on bookshelves in our
home and office, but when the Lord led us to go into full time
evangelism, we sold many of them, gave many more away, and stored a
limited number of them. Below we have listed just
a few of the many books
that have stirred and challenged us, or helped us in our studies .
Perhaps you can obtain some and also be blessed by them.

This is
an astounding, prophecy-related novel that keeps you on the edge of your
seat, and thrills you as you consider the fulfillment of some of the
very things described. I could hardly put it down, and rejoiced at its
ending.
The New International Dictionary of Pentecostal and
Charismatic Movements sets modern, Spirit-filled
Christianity in a context that spans two millennia and
the entire Christian world. Like no other resource, this
volume reveals in detail the full, sweeping legacy of
Spirit-empowered movements that have touched hearts and
lives both in modern America and across the centuries
and continents: in medieval Europe, Finland in the
1700s, South India in the 1800s, Azusa Street at the
turn of the 20th century--and much more, including
ongoing moves of the Holy Spirit throughout the world
today. A great study tool for those wanting to know more
about the history of the pentecostal movement.
Escape
the enemy's deadly trap! The Bait of Satan exposes one of the most
deceptive snares Satan uses to get believers out of the will of
God---offense. Have you ever been offended?? Most people who are ensnared by the bait of Satan don't
even realize it. Don't be fooled! You will encounter offense, and it's
up to you how it will affect your relationship with God. Your response
will determine your future. If offense is handled correctly, you will
become stronger rather than bitter. In this tenth anniversary edition of
his best-selling book, John Bevere shows you how to stay free from
offense and escape the victim mentality.
One that
I read three or four times, just to stir my faith again, is
High
Adventures In Tibet,
by David Plymire.
He related the missionary
experiences of his Pentecostal father Victor Plymire who was a true
pioneer adventurer in the frozen icelands of Tibet. It astounded me to
read of the supernatural miracles of deliverance and direction that
sustained him in his dangerous journey and attempts to bring the Gospel
of the Lord Jesus Christ to the people he came to love.
I have often retold the
account of Brother Plymire's dangerously frostbitten foot and how the Lord awakened
two believers in North America in the middle of the night to pray for
him. Because of his lengthy journey no one had heard from him for two
years and these believers thought he was dead. Yet one related how she
said, alright, Lord, I'll do it... and she interceded in prayer for what
she thought was a dead man's foot. It was the very moment Victor was
considering cutting off his foot, but instead had a miraculous healing
that restored health to that gangrenous foot.
Another amazing answer
came at the moment Brother Plymire was being led out of a Tibetan
Chieftan's tent, to be executed. Our God is an
"On-Time-God", and in that very moment God intervened,
actually reversing the Chief's decision, causing him to send Victor on
his way with soldiers, horses, and many supplies. You, too, will
feel that awe and wonder when you read how God did it.
This one is hard to get, but was one of my treasures.......
China Call,
by Elsie Bolton -This is a great book about
Elsie's father Leonard Bolton... a genuine Pentecostal pioneer
missionary in China. He had to transport 7 years of goods through narrow
mountain paths saturated with robbers. When his "guards" ran, the Holy
Ghost took over and spoke through Brother Bolton in a language he didn't
know, causing the attacking thieves to flee. Over and over you read of
amazing miracles, plus history that is sadly unknown to much of our
generation.
EVIDENCE NOT SEEN, by
Darlene Deibler Rose
An astounding book demonstrating a
woman's miraculous faith in the jungles of World War II.
This is the true story of a young American missionary woman
courage and triump of faith in the jungles of New Guinea and her
four years in a notorious Japanese prison camp. Never to see her
husband again, she was forced to sign a confession to a crime
she did not commit and face the executioner's sword, only to be
miraculously spared.
Look at these critiques:
“An incredible faith-building, awe-inspiring story ... a story
we all need to hear.” (Kay Arthur, Author, Teacher, Precept
Ministries International )
“Darlene’s testimony is a quick and powerful remedy for
anyone who is discouraged or ungrateful.” (Bill Gothard,
Institute in Basic Life Principles, Oak Brook, IL )
“My life was changed when I heard Darlene Rose’s story. It
challenged my faith as nothing else had. ” (Ruth Bell Graham
(daughter of Billy Graham) )
HEROES OF THE HOLY LIFE , by
Wesley L. Duewel
I have just read this book and have
been stirred and challenged by the lives of some of these great
men and women of God. Francis Asbury who was aflame for God
until his death is one who lit a fire in my soul. He exhorted
his circuit riders, " We must reach every section of
America- especially the new frontiers. We must not be afraid of
men, devils, wild animals, or disease. Our motto must always be
FORWARD."
The account of Duncan Campbell
relates how he finished preaching and closed a service with a
benediction. "The organist attempted to play, but her hands
were powerless to touch the keyboard. For over a half hour
everyone was so gripped by God's presence that no one moved.
Then some began to weep and pray...At least four people heard
indescribable sounds from heaven." It was an amazing
revival that swept through Scotland and surrounding areas.
I read about Jonathan Goforth and
his dedication, sacrifices, and determined ministry to China,
with a sense of awe. What a heart for God. What impossibilities
and sorrows he walked through by the power of God.
The lives of D. L. Moody, Evan
Roberts, John Smith and others stirred me. And then I was amazed
at the life of Savonarola. I had never seen him in this light,
never realized that his thundering denunciation of the sins of
the Roman Catholic Church prepared the way for the Protestant
Reformation with Martin Luther.
This is one book certainly worth
reading.
WHY REVIVAL TARRIES
, by Leonard Ravenhill -
What a book! Every page brings heart stirring conviction, and
an awareness of the great need for revival in our churches. Just before he died, Bro. Ravenhill wrote
my sister that he was considering writing a sequel to this book and
calling it, "Why Revival Still Tarries." His message
would probably have been the same as stated in this classic. What a
desperate need we have for a real move of God in our churches. I have a
copy of that hand written letter, and I treasure it.
REVIVAL GOD'S WAY: A MESSAGE FOR THE CHURCH, BY LEONARD
RAVENHILL
Leonard Ravenhill’s call to revival is as timely now as it
was when first published over forty years ago. The message is
fearless and often radical as he expounds on the disparity
between the New Testament church and the church today. Why
Revival Tarries contains the heart of his message. A.W. Tozer
called Ravenhill "a man sent from God" who
"appeared at [a] critical moment in history," just as
the Old Testament prophets did. Included are questions for group
and individual study. Ravi Zacharias refers to this as "the
book that shaped me...more dramatically than any other..."
The Complete Works of E. M. Bounds: Power Through Prayer, Prayer and Praying Men, The Essentials of Prayer, The Necessity of Prayer, The Possibilities ... Purpose in Prayer, The Weapon of Prayer
This single volume
is one of those rare life-changing books. No one else
wrote with such power and authority on prayer. His writing will
stir you and convict you, and has been a life-changing book for many a
Christian. It includes several of E. M.
Bounds powerful, classic books on prayer and is
a valuable source for
any believer.
For almost a century Edward McKendree Bounds'
(1835-1913) books on prayer have been classic works, stimulating and
inspiring Christians to develop a fuller prayer life and become prayer
warriors. A forceful writer and deep thinker, Bounds spent the last
nineteen years of his life reading, writing, and praying. He rose at 4
a.m. daily for many years, and was indefatigable in his study of the
Bible.

GIFTS AND MINISTRIES OF THE HOLY
SPIRIT, by Lester Sumrall
I used this book as an extra resource when I taught Pentecostal Dynamics
and found it instructive pertaining to descriptions and use of these
promised gifts. It also includes many thrilling illustration of gifts of the Spirit in
operation in the church. You will read the astounding account of a
deceiver who stood up in a church declaring that she was sent by God to
begin a revival in this church and that no one should oppose her. After a
cold chill settled on the congregation, a little lady spoke forth quietly
but with God's authority, revealing that this "visitor" was
actually a prostitute from St. Louis who had told the man she was now
staying with that she could come into this church and deceive the people
and get a good offering. The gift of discerning of spirits, and a
word of knowledge may have worked together to expose and defeat this
deceiver. Oh, how we need a revival of the gifts of the spirit in
our churches today!
CONCERNING
SPIRITUAL GIFTS, by Donald Gee
This is another classic that was beneficial to me in my studies of the
Gifts of the Spirit. A great book.
REVIVAL FIRE, by Wesley Duewel
Outstanding insight on the history and future of revival.
Well documented research written in an exciting manner. It is
one of those "I can't put it down" books. One of the
best books on revival.
"I strongly
recommend that Revival Fire be prayerfully read by ministers, lay
leaders, and church members. It's God's clarion call to us
today." -Dr. G. Raymond Carlson

MIGHTY PREVAILING PRAYER, BY WESLEY DUEWEL
I love books that stir me to pray. This one hits you with it's
very first sentence: "ARE YOU LONGING for power in prayer,
the ability to get urgent and needed answers? "
If there are two books that I consider the best on the subject
it would be this one and The Complete Works of E. M.
Bounds on Prayer.
Listen to what others say about this book:
"Duewel is one of the deepest authors I have ever read
on the subject of the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of
the believer, and on prayer, and on spiritual power. Read
everything you can find by this man."
"Duewel's book on prayer will make you stop and pray
long before you get to the end. As I think of all the great
Christians who have written on prayer - i would still say this
is the best inspirational and practical book I have found so
far."
THE FEAR OF THE LORD,
BY JOHN BEVERE
Brother Goodwin has
read this and says it is "a book that targets a great need
of this present hour. It encourages a return to fear and
reverence of God in these last irreverent days.
Understanding why and
how to fear god is the beginning of knowing Him as He yearns to
be known. Bevere challenges believers to reverence God anew in
their worship, prayers, and daily living. This book will inform
and encourage believers to intimately know God like never
before.
The most complete and thorough understanding of the ministry of the Holy
Spirit in the church today. It deals with many aspects of His work, as He
fulfills His mission to the church. -Brother Goodwin
Brother Goodwin has been reading this book and has been challenged by its
message.
The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance
This is a must-have for extensive Bible studies. For a long
time it was my practice to sit in my
lounge chair, Bible in lap, with Strong's Concordance standing on the floor
to the left, and along side it would be my notebook for personal
notations, and two more of my favorite research sources: the
Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament (TWOT),
and Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New
Testament Words.
Rich meanings of Bible words put truth on fire for me. I often did
studies of a particular word through the Scriptures. How thrilling God's
word becomes as we take time to study it in depth.
"Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament"
An extensive, scholarly discussion of every Hebrew word of
theological significance in the Old Testament. Keyed to Strong's
Concordance. Reprint of former two volume edition, now combined into one
volume.
I loved to use this great resource. Simply look up the O.T
word in Strongs, get Strong's number, and use that to find it
in TWOT.
Look at what one Pastor wrote
about TWOT : (He had the 2 Vol. set)
This is a great set. I got it about 20 years ago when it first
came out, and, as a pastor of over 23 years, I say "Go
for it!" Although I do not refer to this work every week,
it comes in handy when I need to do a Hebrew word study.
Because it is cross-indexed with Strongs, you can find the
Hebrew words (and their definitions/expansions) without
knowing a stitch of Hebrew.
For practical ministry use, this is the set to get! It
provides plenty of information, clear definitions, but does
not get tedious (usually). I would recommend it over older
studies which are not nearly as accurate (especially those
done before the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in the
1940's).
PEACE CHILD, BY DON RICHARDSON
I treasured this book, and recommended it to whole classes of
Bible School students. What an astounding true account of the
headhunting Sawi tribe of Irian Jaya, their treachery and
deceitfulness, and the amazing way God used their own culture to
bring more than half the tribe to Salvation through Jesus
Christ.
ETERNITY IN THEIR HEARTS, BY DON RICHARDSON
How could unreached tribes and cultures through the centuries
come to believe in One True God without having the Gospel
brought to them? Reading this book makes causes you to see the
sovereign hand of Almighty God revealing Himself to them through
their own cultures.. preparing the way for the saving Gospel of
Jesus Christ. An astounding must-read!!
