Knowing The Doctrines of the Bible, by Myer Pearlman

This work is useful in studying theology and Pentecostal teachings in particular and is useful for
reference. Pearlman uses the King James Version. This is a favorite of Bible School students
because of its thorough and yet concise statement of Biblical truths.

When Skeptics Ask, By Norman Geisler

I loved teaching Apologetics--a study of the reasoned defense of Christianity and its beliefs. This was one of the textbooks I used and appreciated for its clear presentation.

Does God exist? What if he is not all-powerful? Where did evil come from? Are miracles mythological? Why is Jesus better than other teachers? When skeptics ask questions like these, believers can turn to this helpful, user-friendly guide for thoughtful answers and clear explanations. In When Skeptics Ask, apologetics experts Geisler and Brooks explain how to defend the faith, using the authority and inspiration of Scripture. Readers will discover answers for objections to classic Christianity and learn to identify and respond to the misuse of Scripture by nonbelievers. "Geisler is one of the foremost defenders of the Christian faith today."--Josh McDowell "Geisler has been a model of apologetical activism to a generation of evangelicals. When Skeptics Ask is no exception to this rule."--J. P. Moreland "This is an excellent tool for Christians who want to be able to provide sound answers to real intellectual questions about the Christian faith."--R. C. Sproul

Evidence That Demands A Verdict, By Josh McDowell

This is an excellent compilation of proofs for what Christian's believe about the Bible, Jesus Christ, His Existence, His Deity, His Resurrection, Accuracy of Prophecies fulfilled, and so much more. I incorporated some of this material into my Apologetics course at Free Gospel Bible Institute, in Export, Pennsylvania.

I especially liked McDowell's defense of Christ as "Lord, Liar, or Lunatic?"

The Case For Christ: A Journalist's Personal Investigation of the Evidence for Jesus,  By Lee Strobel

This is a book you can't put down once you start reading. I was fascinated as I followed the footsteps of this seasoned, unbelieving journalist who investigated impressive people and sources assuming he would disprove who Christians asserted Jesus to be.

Strobel Chases Down the Biggest Story in History The Project: Determine if there’s credible evidence that Jesus of Nazareth really is the Son of God. The Reporter: Lee Strobel, educated at Yale Law School, award-winning former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune—with a background of atheism. The Experts: A dozen scholars, with doctorates from Cambridge, Princeton, Brandeis, and other top-flight institutions, who are recognized authorities on Jesus. The Story: Retracing his own spiritual journey, Strobel cross-examines the experts with tough, point-blank questions: How reliable is the New Testament? Does evidence exist for Jesus outside the Bible? Is there any reason to believe the resurrection was an actual historical event? . . .

This remarkable book reads like a captivating, fast-paced novel. But it’s not fiction. It’s a riveting quest for the truth about history’s most compelling figure. What will your verdict be in The Case for Christ -- Publisher

The Biblical View of Self-Esteem, Self-Love, Self-Image., By Jay Adams

These popular terms have infiltrated, effected, and even shaped the lives of many Christians and churches. What does the Bible say about Self-Esteem, Self-Love, and Self-Image? I used this material as I taught Christian Counseling for many years. This is a view contrary to much popular opinion, but Biblically based. I challenge you to read this book. I am sure it will become a strong source of help for your life and ministry.

Competent To Counsel and The Christian Counselor's Manual, by Jay Adams

These are two of the text books I used for many years as I introduced Bible Students and others to Biblical counseling. I recommend them as a dramatic change from the counseling of the world.

The inspired Psalmist said it well, "Psa. 1:1  Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly…"  and Psalm 33: 10 - 11  "The Lord bringeth THE COUNSEL OF THE HEATHEN to nought, He maketh the devices of the people of none effect.  THE COUNSEL OF THE LORD standeth forever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations."

The responsibility and power for helping people with life’s problems belongs to those people who have been redeemed and have become members of the Living Church. Imperfect, troubled people fill our world, people who have fears and depressions, argue and fight, have marital and family problems, etc: How will we help them? Are we competent to counsel them? Shall we send them to Mental Health Clinics, Psychiatrists, Psychologists? Can they perfect these imperfect people?

GOD HAS A PLAN FOR PERFECTING IMPERFECT PEOPLE...

PREACHING JESUS CHRIST- Colossians 1:28 Christ...”whom we preach...that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus”.

THE WORD OF GOD- 2 Timothy 3:16-17
“All scripture is given..that the man of God may be perfect...”

THE MINISTRIES OF THE APOSTLE, PROPHET, PASTOR, TEACHER AND EVANGELIST- Ephesians 4:11-12 The ministry gifts are given “for the perfecting of the saints”

FERVENT PRAYER-  Colossians 4:12 “Epaphras...always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand PERFECT and complete in all the will of God.”

A young preacher out of Bible School just a couple of years said: “I never thought there could be so many hurting people!”  He had discovered an unending stream of troubled, hurting people, each looking to him for guidance and counsel. It is reassuring to read in Isaiah 50:4 of the source of just the right words to be spoken to needy people.

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

Whatever  phase of ministry you may enter, you will not avoid the desperate needs for counsel.  Counseling is simply teaching the truth in love to those in need.

In our counseling class we often sang:

Oh To Be His Hand Extended, Reaching out to the oppressed, Let me touch Him, Let me touch Jesus, That others may know and be blessed.
